Passive voice

Passive Voice
Read the following sentences taken from the previous text. Pay attention to the words in bold.

  • It is accessible, as it's situated in the middle of town.
  • However, due to security reasons, it was shortened to 750m.
  • The cave is located on Sianok Canyon.
  •  However, only the panorama park is used as the entrance these days.
The above sentences use passive voice.
Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not know, however, who or what is performing the action. For example: My bicyle  was stolen. The focus is on the fact that my bicyle was stolen. I do not know. however, who did it.
Occasionally a statement in passive voice is more polite than active. For example: A mistake was made. In the case, I focus on the fact that a mistake was made, but i do not blame anyone.

Form : be + pas participal (V3)

When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the following:

  • The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.
  • The finite form of the verb is changed (to be + past participal)
  • The subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentences (or is dropped).
      See the changes below.

However, the agent of the action, which is preceded by the preposition 'by', is not always stated in a passive sentence. See the examples below.
